Karate bootcamp weekend

Sensei Juan Ferreira organised a karate bootcamp weekend for his Sedgefield goju ryu students at bootcamp@rondevlei during 2 & 3 November. Fourteen students attended varying from white belts through to black. They started the friday with a dojo class and kata exercises on the outside fields. The fellows then cooled off in the farm pool and played a few games before getting ready for the evening braai. Mario, father of Juan, taught the boys how to make ‘stick bread’ over the fire and for many it was a novel experience. After a social around the fire and full bellies, they were entertained to a karate video of Bruce Lee’s younger years. It was then time for a shower and bed. By first light the team got together for breakfast and then it was off on a jog to the Wolwe River and a kata in the shallow waters. The 1km run home got the boys warmed up again for the obstacle course and more outdoor exercise under the watchful eye of their sensei and assisted by Russell Young (2nd dan). There was then a short break for drinks, a swim and a few games. After lunch it was back to karate training and both fitness and punching exercises on the makiwara boards. By 5pm the parents were invited to a drumming session in the dojo and an outddor kata display on the soccer field. The weekend was concluded with a braai and a team building talk around the camp fire. “This is definately the first of many karate bootcamp outings in the future”, sensei Juan told parents and kids.

Cittaslow Sunday Fun in the Sun

Slow Town Wines

Slow Town Sunday was celebrated at Rondevlei Guest Farm outside Sedgefield in the company of good friends. The gorgeous spring day saw foodies set up their camp chairs and umbrella on the green grass while the braai fires were being prepared. Fine wine in the form of Sedgefield’s own “Slow Town Wine” was on display for sampling in a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. While the kids swam and played ball games the adults took in the sunshine and exhibited their culinary skills. A great day was had by all and we hope to see you all again next year.
